EXPRESS SHULTD

Mail order and internet retail · Birmingham

Orders leave our unit in Witton, packed by the people who picked them.

EXPRESS SHU LTD sells goods by mail order and over the internet. Stock is held, picked, packed and dispatched from a single unit on the Wyrley Industrial Estate in Birmingham, so one building sees an order through from shelf to sealed carton.

How an order moves

Received and checked against stock

An order that reaches us is read against what is physically on the shelf, not only against a stock figure. Where a line has been picked down to nothing since the order was placed, we say so in writing before anything is packed, and we hold the rest of the order until the customer tells us how to proceed. Delivery details are checked at this point too, because a mistyped house number is far cheaper to correct here than after a parcel has been labelled.

Picked, packed and labelled in the unit

Picking is done against a printed list and checked a second time at the bench before the box is closed. Packing is chosen for the goods, not for the shelf: fragile items are boxed with fill on every face, flat goods travel in board rather than in a bag that can be creased in a cage, and anything heavy is packed so the weight sits over the base of the carton. The label goes on last, over a sealed seam, so a box that has been opened in transit is obvious on arrival.

Handed to the carrier and tracked

Parcels are manifested and handed over as a batch on the dispatch run for their zone. The consignment reference goes to the customer by email so the same number can be quoted back to us, and we keep the packing record against the order. If a parcel stalls somewhere in the network, the claim is ours to raise with the carrier — the customer deals with us, not with a depot.

Delivery zones

Every UK postcode area sits in one of four dispatch zones. Type a postcode, or just the letters at the front of one, and the lookup will tell you which zone the address falls into.

The lookup reads the letters at the start of the postcode, so BT and B resolve to different zones.

UK postcode areas by dispatch zone
Zone Covers Postcode areas
A England and Wales, mainland, together with the Isle of Wight AL, B, BA, BB, BD, BH, BL, BN, BR, BS, CA, CB, CF, CH, CM, CO, CR, CT, CV, CW, DA, DE, DH, DL, DN, DT, DY, E, EC, EN, EX, FY, GL, GU, HA, HD, HG, HP, HR, HU, HX, IG, IP, KT, L, LA, LD, LE, LL, LN, LS, LU, M, ME, MK, N, NE, NG, NN, NP, NR, NW, OL, OX, PE, PL, PO, PR, RG, RH, RM, S, SA, SE, SG, SK, SL, SM, SN, SO, SP, SR, SS, ST, SW, SY, TA, TF, TN, TQ, TR, TS, TW, UB, W, WA, WC, WD, WF, WN, WR, WS, WV, YO
B Scottish mainland AB, DD, DG, EH, FK, G, KA, KY, ML, PA, PH, TD
C Scottish Highlands and Islands HS, IV, KW, ZE
D Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands BT, GY, IM, JE

Some areas straddle a boundary: the Isles of Scilly sit inside the TR area, and a number of PA and PH districts are island addresses. Where a full postcode lands on one of those, we say so on the order confirmation and handle it as an island destination.

Zones describe how a parcel leaves the unit, and the arrangements that apply to a particular order are set out in that order's confirmation email.

Returns, in short

Goods bought at a distance carry a statutory right to cancel, and we work to that framework. Write to the warehouse address below with the order reference before sending anything back, so the return can be booked in against the original picking record. Send the goods in a condition that lets them be checked — the outer packaging can be opened, the item itself should be intact and complete. Once the parcel is back on the bench and checked, we confirm the outcome by email to the address the order was placed from.

If something arrives damaged or the wrong line has been picked, tell us before returning it. Photographs of the parcel as it arrived, including the label and the damaged face, let us raise the claim with the carrier and put the order right at the same time.

Contact the warehouse

Everything — orders, stock questions, returns, and correspondence about the company itself — goes to one mailbox, which is read in the unit.

When writing about an order, quote the order reference and the delivery postcode; that is enough for us to find the picking record.
